From Our Editors
The Barnes & Noble Review
Whatever other books they buy, IT professionals know that the foundation text for managing Windows systems is the official Microsoft resource kit. Now, the Windows XP Professional Edition has just arrived, nearly 1,700 pages strong with a corresponding eBook on CD-ROM. This fat book covers the waterfront: deployment, desktop management, security, networking, interoperability, troubleshooting, and a whole lot more.

It's hard to pick out the highlights in a book this big, but we'll flag some areas where this book delivers especially great value to IT organizations. First, there's the step-by-step coverage of automating deployment across multiple systems, using Setup Manager, Remote Installation Server, Sysprep, and -- for those in global companies -- Microsoft's multilingual deployment tools. Then, there's the detailed coverage of mobile and remote user support, including power management, synchronization of offline files, wireless network support, and the new Remote Desktop.

There's a full section on security, including some significant changes, large and small: the new Simple Sharing workgroup security model; blank password restrictions; password reset disks, and so forth. The book's networking section now includes a full chapter on connecting remote, small, and home offices -- including coverage of Internet Connection Sharing, XP's built-in firewall, and remote access security.

Finally, the book delivers hundreds of pages of troubleshooting strategies and techniques -- including especially detailed coverage of startup, disk, and file system troubleshooting; information on common Stop messages, and a 100-page appendix on XP's suite of troubleshooting tools.
